Why Exercise and Being Outside Are My Daily Refresh
As a financial advisor, my job often requires strong focus, strategy, and long hours. To keep things balanced, I’ve learned that a daily refresh is important. The best way to get this is by getting outside and letting nature help me relax.
For me, exercise and nature go hand in hand. Whether it’s walking through a forest, paddling on a calm lake, or just taking a long walk to clear my mind, these times in nature are key for my mental clarity and overall wellness.
Growing up in New Brunswick, I had some of Canada’s most beautiful places right in my backyard. But like many, I didn’t always notice what was around me. It was so easy to get busy with work and daily tasks and miss enjoying being outside.
Things changed when I started caring more about fitness. At first, I went to the gym often, but soon, I realized exercising inside wasn’t for me. I missed fresh air, open spaces, and the challenge of rough paths. I put on my hiking boots, hit the trails and I’m so glad I did.
One thing that’s great about exercising outside is how easy it is to start. You don’t need costly gear or memberships ‒ just some time and the desire to try. Trail running is a favourite activity of mine because it mixes cardio with stunning views. The soft dirt paths are gentle on the joints, and the changing terrain keeps it exciting.
Kayaking is another activity that I do often. Being on the water is very calming, especially in the early morning when it’s quiet, with no disturbances save for the paddle breaking the water. It’s a workout for the whole body, but it doesn’t feel like one because I’m too busy enjoying the view.
Cycling is also a wonderful way to mix exercise with adventure. From country roads to twisting trails, it’s a great way to explore new places while getting your heart pumping. For me, cycling is a way to challenge myself physically and enjoy the journey at my own speed.
Everyone knows that being in nature is good for mental health. I can attest to this myself. On days when stress builds up, or I’m stuck on a problem, a quick outdoor workout quickly shifts my mood and changes my perspective.
Studies show that even a short walk in nature lowers stress, improves focus, and sparks creativity. I always tell people to try it ‒ whether you’re busy facing a tough decision or just feeling off, going outside can change things a lot.
From my outdoor experiences, I’ve learned that nature helps ground us. It reminds us of what truly matters ‒ our health, our mindset, and our ability to change and grow.
Whether you love the outdoors or are just starting to explore it, I hope you’ll go outside today. Listen to the birds, feel the wind, and let the world slow down a bit. You might find more clarity than you expected.
